![]() Gordon discovered this the hard way when he was barred from investigating murders that could have prevented a new supervillain, Mr. Batman was effective partly because he had no superiors to answer to, his anonymity giving him the leeway to investigate at his much faster pace than that of the GCPD. But he quickly began to see how problematic this line of thought was. He wanted to see if a Batman who worked with the system instead of outside of it could be as effective. The only problem was finding a suitable candidate. ![]() ![]() With no other options, the city began looking for an official replacement, this time one who would work within the system to better coordinate between crimefighter and peacekeepers. Dick Grayson was incognito as an international spy, Red Hood was doing his own thing, and both Red Robin and Robin were far too young to put on the cowl. But the people capable of filling Batman's boots were unavailable. The city's leadership knew right away that this was just another catastrophe waiting to happen. Gotham was saved, but it had lost its protector. But before he accepted his fate, Batman delivered the cure to his allies. In perhaps their bloodiest brawl ever, both Batman and Joker were left broken as a cave collapsed all around them. As Batman raced to find a cure before all hope was lost, Joker began playing mind games with the Dark Knight, revealing that he knew Bruce's identity and that this was their final battle. During the "Endgame" storyline by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the Joker unleashed one of his deadliest attacks ever, infecting the entire city with a pathogen form of his joker venom that could be spread through laughter.
